We have a brewing crisis in Wake County and many people don't like talking about it. Our first responder system for EMT / Paramedics and Fire Fighters is stretched to the limit right now. There have been several news reports about it, but the problem is worse that what's being reported. Too many times throughout the day, our EMS services are scrambling to ensure we have adequate staff. Our fire departments and yes, our Sheriff's Office are all facing crisis situations because of staffing shortages. In the Sheriff's Office, there are reports of mandatory overtime in our jail and often patrol levels are reaching dangerous shortfalls. I believe it's critical to support our first responders. If I am elected, I will work across the aisle and across departments to develop sound strategies that will provide the coverage and protection our citizens need to have in Wake County. The Sheriff's Office and all law enforcement agencies in the county work side by side with our first responders so they are true partners with our deputies, troopers and police officers. We need bold leadership in our county government to support our first responders and make sure we have a voice who will shoot straight with our citizens -- even when the news is less than good. It's time we begin working to address the workforce shortages the county is facing when it comes to the Sheriff's Office, EMS and Fire Services. As your next Sheriff, I will work day and night to ensure the highest levels of service in public safety for Wake County.
